If featherweight Nesthy Petecio and flyweight Carlo Paalam are given tickets for the 2021 Olympic Games, the Philippines will have a better chance for a gold medal.
This is what Ricky Vargas, president of the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP), said recently.
Optimistic that Petecio and Paalam will get an Olympic slot, Vargas said: “If we have four (boxers) in Tokyo, believe me, we will have a medal in the Olympics.”
Middleweight Eumir Felix Marcial and flyweight Irish Magno previously punched the Olympic berth for the quadrennial event scheduled in Tokyo, Japan from July 23 to August 8.
Olympic organizers recently announced the cancellation of the final world qualifying tournament in June in France due to coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
As a result, only the highest-ranked boxers of Asia-Oceana, Americas, Europe and Africa will be given the Olympic spot.
