The Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League has announced that it will postpone the Game 3 of the Northern and Southern Division Finals due to fears of COVID-19.
The announcement was made by none other than the league’s commissioner Kenneth Duremdes on Thursday evening.
“Though we would have wanted to hold the deciding Game Threes on Saturday, March 14, we cannot take for granted the danger COVID-19 poses to the spectators, players, team members, and MPBL staff,” Duremdes’ statement read.
“Just like other sports organizations and events, the league’s primary concern is the health and safety of the public.”
Currently, the San Juan Knights versus Makati Super Crunch as well as the Basilan Steel and the Davao Occidental Tigers are tied at 1-all and Game 3 will be the determining match to reveal this season’s Lakan Cup finalists.
Last Wednesday, Game 2 of the Group A match was held at FilOil Flying V Center, the home of the Knights which was originally set at Makati Coliseum but due to the coronavirus threat, the said duel was transferred back to San Juan in a closed-door showdown.
“We will be closely monitoring the national situation involving COVID-19 until it is contained,” Duremdes’ statement closed.
