NorthPort Batang Pier big-man Christian Standhardinger was named as the Best Player of the Conference of the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup.
Stanhardinger collected a total of 1,011 points coming from his statistical points, media, fellow players and PBA Commissioner’s office votes.
The Fil-German beats his fellow teammate June Mar Fajardo, Jayson Castro, CJ Perez, and Kiefer Ravena to win on the said third conference personal award.
Standhardinger was selected by the Beermen as their top pick in the 2017 PBA Draft via a controversial trade that sent three SMB role players to Kia (now Columbian Dyip) in exchange for the rights for the top pick.
However, Standhardinger needed to make an adjustment the way he plays in order for him to fit in the already formidable San Miguel Beermen.
“When I got here, San Miguel got me and as I said back then, there’s so many good scorers, there’s really nothing much I can do. I have to try to fit in and adjust and become that player who can help that team win the most,” he said.
On October 14, 2019, SMB dealt him to the NorthPort Batang Pier in exchange for Moala Tautuaa.
Standhardinger wasted no time and demonstrated his true form and the reason why he was one of the best talents prior to his professional career in the PBA.
“I have to change myself as a player because NorthPort, we needed a little bit more scoring so I did that. And I’m happy that it worked out the way it did. Obviously I’m not happy we didn’t make the finals but I think all of us, we know what we need to improve on, we know we should come as a team better and be the team that we really can be,” he said.
Along with Michael Qualls and Sean Anthony, Standhardinger is one of the reasons for their team’s emergence.
In the first round of the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup playoffs, Standhardinger and company toppled the number one team, the NLEX Road Warriors that owns a twice-to-win advantage.
Though his NorthPort team failed to reach the Finals this conference but indeed they have a brighter future for the upcoming PBA 45th season.
